I joined KNOME, Inc(a human genome interpretation company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts - prestigious client of UVJ TECH) as a senior product designer. I've been extremely fortunate to have part of this journey and have grown tremendously during my time at Knome. Our team comprised of Project Manager, Product Owner,3 developers,2 genome scientists, and a quality engineer.

About Project
Upload, share and compare human genomes test result with your colleagues

This site is to allow you to upload, share and compare human genomes test result with your colleagues. Simply create a profile – which can be as public or private as you wish – and then navigate your way around the tool. You now have the ability to find colleagues and share your genomic files or the results of your genomic analysis with these colleagues. Collaborate as much as you want and be assured that your data is in safe hands. Second – This site is an entire library of public genomic data for free. The data is ready to go in a format that will process through our tools with a simple drag and drop. Third – We’ve tried to make our GUI as user-friendly, intuitive and fun as possible. To date, genomic analysis has occurred on the command line – something with which many people are less than comfortable.

The Challenge
The Challenge

The founder of ‘Knome’ came to us for help in turning a transformative idea into a reality. Challenges existed in providing an innovative and elegant solution to solve problems prevalent in the genome industry. We were asked to design and deliver ‘Genepool- A Genomic social media Website for researchers’ to find colleagues and share your genomic files or the results of your genomic analysis with these colleagues.

Goal
Goal

To design an intranet based interactive and visually appealing social media website for researchers to find colleagues and share your genomic experiments or the results of genomic analysis with these colleagues.Second - an entire library of public genomic data for free. The data is ready to go in a format that will process through our tools with a simple drag and drop Third- Make our GUI as user-friendly, intuitive and fun as possible.Better user experience by making responsive and fast loading user friendly uwebsite with relevent information as required by the the stakeholders.

Research & Analysis
Research & Analysis

User research is undoubtedly an important part of a product cycle whether we are launching a new product, adding a feature or Improving one. To start, none of the members of our team had previous science or genetic knowledge. This threw us in an initial stressful situation wondering how to carry the project. Luckily, Dr. John and Lidiya were not only our clients but our tutors and collaborators. We also carried out in-depth research among employees of'KNOME' who are the real users of this project, using these insights to form a comprehensive digital strategy. We have conducted qulaitative research method for obtaining information from the real users. We have had one to one sessions with scientists through skype as many researchers are sitting different offices. We discussed with them about the usage of social media in Scientific work places as this project mainly targeted to scietists to share their genome projects and Experiments with their colleauges. We have also condcuted direct interview with researhers.

Some of the questions asked during user Interview process

Tell me about your role at your company?

When do you normally first use the Internet in a typical day?

Are you looking for a solution or alternative way to share Genome result with your co-workers?

How do you think this product is going to help you?

What other tools have you tried out?

What is the most important feature you think we should add?

What are the main tasks do you use to accomplish and why?

How often do you use our product/website?

What are the most frequent tasks you do when using this website?

Interview Outcome

Finally, the website most commonly used by the users are Facebook and Reddit as well as Youtube.

Most of the users needs to complete the task in a fun way.

Users Need More genomic analysis tools – both from public sources and private

Enhanced social networking – such as links to linkedin, facebook, google + etc.

One of the feature more users needed is specialized searches for genomes with desired phenotypes

Support for the non-scientist – individuals who have their genomes sequenced and want user-centric tools to give them insight into their health and genetic history.

The design should be simple, elegent & easy to understand.

Scenario
Scenario

Ann, working as a researcher have to share all her experiments files to colleguaes. Now she is sending her project files through mail. Most of the files exeeds 25mb Files. Some times these mails goes the spam folder. She has to wait for long hours to get a reply from the colleages. So she need a system like facebook to get instant like, share and Comments from the collleagues about her experiments.

Wireframe & Design

My goal was to provide design solutions for the pain points uncovered in the initial research. As with all other aspects of the project, the mobile and desktop versions were iterated on together on a parallel path.
